GHG
Greenhouse Gases.

International standard specifying the requirements applicable to bodies conducting validation and verification of information related to greenhouse gas emissions.
SCC
Standards Council of Canada.
Canadian body responsible for the accreditation of validation and verification bodies.
VVB
Validation and Verification Body.
Independent third-party body accredited to conduct validation and verification activities in accordance with recognized standards.
V&V
Validation & Verification.
Generic term referring to all validation and verification activities.
Technical Terms
Accreditation
Formal recognition certifying that an organization is competent to perform specific activities according to defined standards, within a given scope.
Opinion
Formal conclusion issued at the end of a validation or verification activity, based on evidence and an independent review.
Accreditation Framework
Set of rules defining the conditions, limits, and scope within which an organization is authorized to conduct its activities.
Regulatory Framework
Set of applicable standards, rules, and requirements governing validation and verification activities (e.g., ISO standards, accreditation requirements, and, where applicable, specific requirements related to regulatory or voluntary frameworks).
Regulatory Framework
Legal environment in which certain organizations are subject to legal obligations for reporting, validation, or verification.
Voluntary Framework
Environment in which organizations voluntarily engage in measuring, verifying, or reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.
Conflict of Interest
Situation in which a relationship, activity, or interest could compromise, or be perceived as compromising, the impartiality of a validation or verification activity.
Compliance
State of meeting applicable requirements, whether normative, regulatory, or programmatic.
Validation / Verification Decision
Formal decision made at the end of evaluation and review activities, based on the evidence collected.
Evidence
Objective information or data used to support a validation or verification conclusion.
Evaluation
Systematic analysis process aimed at assessing the compliance, consistency, and reliability of information, data, or projects.
Impartiality
Absence of bias, conflict of interest, or undue influence in conducting validation and verification activities.
Independence
Situation in which an organization or person has no relationship that could affect the objectivity of their evaluations.
Carbon Market
System allowing the exchange of greenhouse gas emission reductions or removals, within a regulatory or voluntary framework.
Accreditation Scope
Domain, sector, or type of activity for which an organization is recognized as competent by an accreditation body.
Program
Structured framework defining specific rules applicable to the validation and verification of projects, declarations, or activities.
Carbon Program
Structured framework defining the rules applicable to the validation and verification of projects or activities related to greenhouse gas emissions, particularly within carbon markets.
Independent review
Critical examination of work performed, conducted by a separate person or function, to ensure the consistency and objectivity of conclusions.
Separation of Functions
Organizational principle consisting of distinguishing the roles of planning, execution, review, and decision-making to avoid any conflict of interest situation.
Management System
Structured set of procedures, rules, and responsibilities aimed at ensuring the quality, compliance, and continuous improvement of an organization’s activities.
Independent Third Party
Entity operating without any dependency relationship with the organizations or projects being evaluated, ensuring the objectivity and credibility of opinions rendered.
Validation (ex ante)
Evaluation conducted before the implementation of a project, method, or information, to assess its compliance with applicable requirements.
Verification (ex post)
Evaluation conducted after the period concerned, focusing on existing data or declarations, to confirm their accuracy, consistency, and reliability.
